The Cave

Yesterday we took a ferry from the harbour to the Island of Frioul. The 30 minute ride brought us past an enormous old prison, secluded in the middle of the sea, and arriving at last to a very interesting place: an abandoned island. This is due, solely to the fact that it is winter. And there were, of course, the other passangers on the ferry, as well as those boarding for the return... but as soon as we turned right along the island, we didn't set eyes another soul until we came back to the ferry. Climbing to the top of the limestone cliff a beautiful view of the bay and the city knocks us back, almost as sure as the wind. We walked onwards, bundled up as best as we can, and stood face to face with the walls of a decaying fortress. It was such an awesome yet incredibly eerie place. The stillness is what unsettled me. That and the cave. Underneath the old fortress was completely pitch black room which we, naturally, went inside. C-r-e-e-p-y. My heart started pounding and I was sure someone would jump out any minute. Luckily we truly were alone. The island also housed an old Hospital, boarded up and restricted. Looking down the cliff we also spotted a cluster of run down buildings, and what we guessed to be a thriving hotel at one point in time. We made our way down and sure enough it was as if we'd stepped smack in the middle of an old movie set. It was bizarre being completely alone surrounded by these large broken homes. A ghost town indeed.

On a completely separate note: We're going to Greece! I received email confirmation yesterday that we have a WWOOFing placement awaiting us on the Paros Islands in the middle of the Aegean Sea.... not such a bad way to spend a Januaray, is it?
